About the Nurse of the Year award

The Nurse of the Year award is given to one nurse each year within Hospital Sisters Health System – Eastern Wisconsin Division. Nurses nominate nursing colleagues from their unit. The nominations are then reviewed by nursing leadership and the Professional Nurse Practice Council (PNPC). Nurses who nominate a peer answer several questions including how the nominee lives our Core Values and demonstrates passion, quality and excellence in nursing.

2018 Nurse of the Year

Chelsee Brawner, RN, BSN, Critical Care Services
HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital
Chelsee Brawner is driven by challenges – they motivate her and help her perform to the highest of her abilities. In fact, looking for a challenge is what helped her get her start in nursing.
Having graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a degree in kinesiology, Chelsee did an internship in cardiac rehab – both inpatient and outpatient – and moved to Green Bay where her husband was already working. When Chelsee had a tough time finding a job in kinesiology, she thought she would take on another challenge – nursing school.
After obtaining her registered nurse degree from Bellin College of Nursing, Chelsee started her nursing career at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center on the medical floor. She stayed in that role for 10 years and then she decided she was ready for a challenge, and accepted a position as a critical care nurse.
“I was ready for a change after working 10 years on the medical floor and I wanted to challenge myself again,” recalls Chelsee. “I thought it’d be an easy transition since I knew a lot of the staff.”
But when it comes to being challenged, Chelsee also experienced challenges this past year that she didn’t pursue. Having faced a breast cancer diagnosis, undergoing two surgeries, and having chemo and radiation, she didn’t let it stop her from meeting and achieving her own goals.
“While going through some personal hurdles last year, Chelsee was still able to maintain a positive attitude and provide compassionate care to her patients,” said Terri Meyers, RN, BSN, Manager, Intensive Care Unit, HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center. “Along with continuing to work, Chelsee stayed active in committees and achieved her Level III Professional Development Plan. Her strength, resilience and work ethics throughout this past year have been an inspiration to her colleagues.”
And while it was a tough year for Chelsee, she knows that her role as a nurse made an impact on her own personal experience, and how she provides care going forward.
“The fact that I was already a nurse made my own experience easier,” said Chelsee. “And now, I approach my patients with a sense of compassion a little different than before. I can relate to them differently now.”
Her strength, resilience and strong work ethic is why her colleagues nominated her to be the HSHS-EWD Nurse of the Year.
“I am so humbled to be recognized as the Nurse of the Year,” said Chelsee. “It is nice to feel you are supported by your peers. After being here for 14 years, it really is an honor.”
In addition to her commitment to patients, Chelsee is a member of the Unit Based Practice Council, a past and present member of the Professional Nurse Practice Council, the Visionary Team and the American Critical Care Association. When she’s not at work, she’s a busy mom to three kids, ages 7, 10 and 12.
But for Chelsee, it’s the challenges and caring for others that drive her.
“I enjoy my patients and listening to and educating them,” said Chelsee. “When you work through someone’s sickness with them, it’s pretty special.”
